UCSF Public Affairs seeks a seasoned health care communicator and strong team player to join our team as a Senior Public Information Representative (SPIR) to promote the mission and work of UCSF Health at a time of significant expansion.

The SPIR will report to the Senior Director - Public Relations and will collaborate closely with the UCSF Health Marketing and Communications team to align media relations strategies and content with UCSF Health's growth strategy, priority service lines, affiliations and acquisitions, and national and local reputation.

The role will also work closely with the OC's Strategic Communications team to develop proactive and reactive materials that align with our strategic initiatives and priorities. This includes working closely with the executive directors of Public Affairs and of Strategic Communications, as well as with the Vice Chancellor of Communications, as needed, on sensitive communications.

Additional responsibilities include managing media inquiries, scheduling interviews and briefing leaders on media focus; developing communications plans with strategy, goals, and tactics; producing news releases, web stories, fact sheets, media pitches, talking points, social media, video scripts, etc.; providing ad hoc media training for spokespeople and counsel on media response; supporting the response to sensitive and/or complex institutional policies or practices; and staffing reporters at onsite media engagements.

This role requires external communications experience in a health care delivery setting. The successful candidate will have public relations experience in an academic medical center or hospital system, understand current business challenges and sensitivities in clinical care, and demonstrate knowledge of best practices in strategic and sensitive communications.

The role also requires strong writing skills, a collaborative spirit, and substantial experience with news media. The ability to identify and earn media placements for UCSF Health business leaders and to write on a variety of health issues is essential. Native-level language proficiency in Spanish or Chinese is preferred.

Please note that this is a HYBRID work role with an in-person requirement in San Francisco.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $94,400 - $201,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

As UCSF's enterprise communications team, the Office of Communications (OC) provides comprehensive and coordinated leadership in planning, creating and implementing integrated strategies across all media to foster increased awareness and support of UCSF's mission, vision, accomplishments and strategic priorities among its diverse internal and external constituencies. It serves as the official voice of UCSF to regional, state, national and international news media. Its Public Affairs team serves as the official voice of UCSF to regional, state, national and international news media.

UCSF Public Affairs is dedicated to supporting UCSF's enterprise strategic goals and communicating UCSF's excellence across the breadth of its mission through traditional and evolving news media, as well as our own channels. The team serves as the front line for media and as the primary external communications liaison with UCSF's -3,900 faculty members, with responsibility for managing those relationships and for guiding them in promoting their work. Public Affairs is a dynamic and collaborative team, made up of bright, talented, motivated colleagues who bring a variety of communications skills to their roles and provide significant support to one another.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area.
  • Minimum five years related work experience.
  • Experience in strategic hospital PR, with an understanding of the hospital and health care landscape, current challenges hospitals face, and the sensitivities, practices and protocols necessary in external hospital communications.
  • Diplomacy in navigating sensitive internal issues, judgment in issue recognition & resolution, and discretion in handling confidential issues.
  • Advanced knowledge of strategies, principles and practices in proactive and responsive media relations.
  • Clear understanding of the evolving news media and ability to engage reporters in a proactive and positive manner to best serve the institution's goals.
  • Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Capacity to learn quickly and adapt to fast-changing news and communications opportunities and challenges.


    Preferred Qualifications

    • Knowledge of UCSF Health, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, programs, policies and infrastructure.
    • Master's degree or higher in related area and/or equivalent experience.
